Dear Division 6 Parents,

Happy Easter!  We hope you had a relaxing long weekend with your family.

This is just a quick note to update you on events happening for the month of April.  This month we will be working on public speaking with the students.  Students in grade three will write and present a one minute speech in front of their peers later this month.  Ms. Andrews is taking students through the process of choosing topics, writing a speech, and practicing with them before students present in front of the class.  Once your child has written his/her speech, please spend some time practicing together.  You want to encourage your child to speak clearly and slowly and add expression while speaking.  While we know that many students are anxious about public speaking, we also know that students are very proud of themselves once they have finished the process.  We have had many opportunities for students to speak in front of class throughout the school year, and we hope that public speaking is an extension of those experiences.

As you also know, we have just planted seed potatoes and hope to harvest them in June.  This Science unit works well with our Healthy Living unit that we have just started as part of our Career and Health Education.  Throughout the unit, students will be trying some new foods.   Please let us know if your child has any food allergies by writing a note in your child’s planner.

Earth Day is on April 22.  Remember to wear blue and green on that day!  Students should also start collecting all the “junk” mail that they receive at home from April 15-21.  This could include flyers, ads, or anything else that they receive that isn’t important.  Please bring these items to school on Earth Day, April 22.

Throughout this third term, we are going to be focusing on building reading fluency and encouraging more independent reading.  When your child is reading at home, please take a moment to write the title of the book in your child’s planner.  When your child comes to school, he/she can write an Accelerated Reader quiz on that book and earn points towards different levels in the program.  Every child is being encouraged to read more chapter books, so please remind your child to bring at least one chapter book home from the library on Mondays.

Thanks for your continued support!

Mrs. de Jager and Ms. Andrews
