Drumming with Milton Randall

On Monday we were treated to a special day of drumming with Milton Randall. The grade 3-5 students spent several hours learning various rhythm patterns, and then got a chance to perform for the K-2 classes in the afternoon. It was incredible to see 145 students drumming together in unison, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day! It was hard to capture some of the moments, since students’ hands were moving so quickly, but these pictures give you an idea of some of the enthusiasm!

Theme Days

About once a month, our school has various theme days to celebrate special events. This first photo was from our Anti-bullying day when students were asked to come to school dressed in pink. Can you see all the green from St. Patrick’s Day in the photo below?

How do Astronauts Eat, Drink, and Play in Space?

Here are the astronauts – mission patches on – ready to blast off! Part of space day was spent experiencing some of the same things that astronauts might feel while they are in space. Students sampled astronaut ice cream, drank juice from bags (since astronauts can’t drink from a cup!) and were challenged to drink their juice while lying down or leaning forward so that they could understand how challenging it is for an astronaut! Then we also played astronaut volleyball, which meant that students needed to lie down and kick the balloon with their feet in order to play. It was so fun to watch the students try all the new experiences!

Antacid Rockets

One of the other fun activities on space day was the launching of our antacid rockets. Made out of film canisters, these rockets blew quite high once we added the antacid and the water. Can you find the flying rocket in each picture?

Space Day – Launching our Mars Landers

On Space Day, students enjoyed a full day of Science activities. One of the highlights from the day was the launching of our Mars landers. Each student had built a Mars lander from various things found at home, and each lander was different. Students used balloons, boxes, insulation, bubble wrap, parachutes, foam, egg cartons, and lots of other materials to build their Mars landers. In the end, seventeen eggs landed successfully, while three did not survive the fall. All the students learned that scientists have to work hard if they want to land something on Mars without breaking it! Thanks to Mr. Village for getting up on the roof to launch the landers!

A Visit from the Reptile Guy

Before Spring Break, the Reptile Guy visited our school. The students were very excited to spend time with all the various snakes, crocodile, turtle, scorpion, and other various reptiles, as you can see from their reactions!

Mrs. Loland had her son, Jonas Julien, on February 18th. He weighed 10 lb 2 oz. Congratulations to the Loland family!

The Torch Visits Division 6

During the month of February, we are working hard, at Terry Fox Elementary, to improve writing skills. Each Monday we are beginning the day with an assembly introducing a book that provides a topic for writing. This week we read the book entitled “It’s Okay To Be Different” by Todd Parr and the writing activity was letter writing. In our classroom, the students wrote an anonymous letter to a friend to compliment them. The letters were wonderful and so we wanted to share them with you. Below are the letters and who they were written to. The author’s name is not listed as the letters are meant to remain anonymous. Enjoy!
